How Melancholies Can Overcome Worry And Anxiety.

How Predominant Melancholies Can Conquer Or Manage Worry And Anxiety:

Apart from the phlegmatics who comes a little bit close, especially when they are faced or confronted with new challenges, and also when they are given a relatively new task to accomplish or perhaps made to embark, and go on a journey to unfamiliar territories. There’s no other temperament that battles with worry and anxiety more than a predominant melancholy. A typical melancholy is a worrier, and very anxious person. He often worries, and expresses anxiety over so many things, especially the things that aren’t real or are yet to happen. While fear and pressure are predominant phlegmatic’s predisposing factors to worry and anxiety. For typical melancholies there are a number of factors that usually makes them worry and also get easily anxious. We shall first off, be considering some of these factors that always makes predominantly melancholies to get worried easily and also become unnecessarily anxious, so that we will be able to recommend the right and appropriate solutions to the problem.

Factors That Predisposes Melancholies To Worry And Anxiety:

1. Lack of Faith And Confidence In God:

If there’s any temperament that’s in need of faith and trust in God, it’s a predominant melancholy. Faith is one of the basic needs of any melancholy personality. Though he’s a very conscientious person, who has got a heart for God, to live by His principles and dictates. But the predominant melancholy person, lacks or has got little or no faith in God. And unless he is filled with the Holy Spirit, he will constantly battle with worry and anxiety, and live with them all through his life. For he’s a perfectionist blessed and endowed with intelligence, intuitive ability and also the capacity to, through detailed analysis, critical thinking and observations predict the possible outcome of an event or something. However, along with all of his strengths or qualities comes corresponding weaknesses of doubt and lack of faith and trust in God. Predominant melancholies more often than not, always use and rely on their human effort in reasoning, feeling, understanding, logical thinking and maybe past and present experiences to determine or conclude on the outcome of something. Their inability to rely on God, have faith and trust in Him, especially for the things that are yet to happen or be seen, and are perhaps beyond their powers, no doubt always predisposes them to worry and anxiety.

It seems to me that God was specifically talking to the melancholy in Matthew 6:33, when He admonished us not to worry and get too anxious about life. He asked, “which of you by taking thoughts has added one hair to the hair of his head”? It is quite very unfortunate that as conscientious and close to God that typical melancholies are, they still constantly battle with worry & anxiety. The reason is not far-fetched. They always allow their human understanding, feeling reasoning and efforts, to interfere in their relationship with God. Melancholies ought to rely more on God rather than on their own thinking, efforts and understanding. They should have faith, and put their trust and confidence in Him. Always read the Bible passage of Matthew 6:33, and make the book of proverbs 5:1-3 which clearly admonishes us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts, and avoid relying on our own understanding. In all our ways, we should acknowledge Him, and He will direct our paths. They should learn to rely more on God especially for the things that they do not have control over and avoid self-help. You may also want to order and read the Spirit controlled temperament written by Tim Lahaye, to help you permanently overcome this weakness from a spiritual perspective.

2. Lack of Believe And Confidence In His God-given Abilities:

Eventhough a typical melancholy has done his best, he still feels that his best isn’t good enough. This is because he often compares himself to the best of other’s traits and fails to evaluate their weaknesses. Melancholies are very gifted and talented people, with a lot of ability. But their perfectionism makes them underestimate their capabilities to the point of losing their self-confidence. He could have taken his time to prepare very well for an interview or exam, but he still doubts his capacity to do very well. Even when has done well enough in the exam or job interview, he finds it very difficult to be confident of being successful when results are finally out. Consequently, he becomes very worried and anxious. Doubt is one of many melancholy’s major weakness. They are doubters, who rarely believes in things they are yet to see. They doubt even their own talent, gift or ability, unless they are motivated and inspired by someone else who sees these natural ability in them and believes in it. In order to overcome worry and anxiety, melancholies ought to believe in their ability, be a bit more confident of themselves, manage their perfectionism or perfectionist mentality, and finally avoid being too critical of themselves. 3. Pessimism:

Pessimism is also another major weakness of the melancholy personality. He’s rarely optimistic since in his mind, he magnifies and exaggerates situations more than the way they really appear. Whenever he is faced with an unfortunate situation rather than confront it with hope and optimism, and try to look at it from the prism of how it actually is. He tends to look at it with a magnifying glass, therefore consequently concocting lots of negative thoughts in his mind that’ll make him become pessimistic about it. There’s none other temperament that expresses pessimism in any negative and unpleasant situation more than the predominant melancholy. The main culprit of this oddity in predominant melancholy is the detailed and analytical way he often reasons. Although this could count for his strengths, but they often turn against him whenever he’s faced with an unfortunate and unpleasant situation in life. Obviously, pessimism triggers agitation in the mind, which consequently prepares the ground for worrying, and being anxious of what will happen next. In order for melancholy to overcome worry and anxiety, he should not allow his strengths turn against him or be the source of his problems. He should also avoid deliberately magnifying things with his analytical reasoning more than they really are. Finally, always approach life’s experiences or situations with hope and optimism whenever he’s confronted with them.

4. Fear of The Unknown:

Although fear is a universal experience that is common to the four temperaments because of the human nature. However, some temperaments have undoubtedly got more predisposition to it than others. The predominant melancholy and phlegmatic personalities are often more predisposed to fear than typical sanguine and choleric personalities. But a typical phlegmatic will be much more fearful than his melancholy counterpart. Our secondary temperament also determines to a large extent which blend of temperament has got stronger or weaker predisposition to fear. Obviously, melphleg and phlegmel blends will battle with fear more than any other blend. But a phlegmel has the strongest predisposition to it than all the twelve blends.

Having said this, fear especially fear of failure and being unable to make use of their imaginative ability to come up with a favourable conclusion about something is one of predominant melancholy’s major predisposing factor to worry and anxiety. A typical melancholy may have taken his time to critically and correctly analyze a situation and come up with an appropriate or best solution but doubt and the fear of not knowing what the outcome will be, is often his main worry. He believes more in what he sees rather than what he hears or feels. As long he hasn’t been able to witness or see it, it definitely leaves a vacuum in him which he fills with worry and anxiety. Melancholies should let the things that are yet to be known or seen, and which they’ve got no power to bring to reality remain in that state. They should rather concentrate, focus and build more on realities to avoid getting themselves unnecessarily agitated, worried and anxious.
